Iris' visit

IrisVisit

My Belgian friend Iris and her boyfriend Walter came to visit me. I gave them tours of Cambridge and London. I don't think either of them had walked so much, nor eaten so many different types of cake, in such a short time recently. Sorry for that! :) Thanks to both of them for visiting!

Ireland

At the beginning of May I went to visit my school friend Rebecca in Longford, Ireland. Thanks Rebecca for the fantastic time, it was lovely to spent time with you and your family. Am very jealous of your beautiful house. My mind has now been refreshed on all the books I read as a child - Burglar Bill is still just as good. Despite not appreciating 'In The Night Garden' and 'the Fimbles', I now have 'Shaun the Sheep' on series record, despite being for kids, I love it!
The Icelandic volcano meant that my flight back to the UK was cancelled, so I ended up booking the ferry back to the UK and taking the train back from Wales. I got back at midnight, rather than mid afternoon, so was walking around like a zombie for 3 days. Hopefully no volcanos will impact my next trip.

3rd Team Hockey Captain

I am now Royston Ladies 3rd team hockey captain. Fingers crossed for an improvement on last year's single win - 2 wins at least please!

Egypt

Egypt

After several years of thinking about going, Claire and I eventually got round to visiting Egypt. We joined a tour, which was a bit slower than our usual holiday pace, and we both gained stomach bugs, but the trip was definitely worth it. We started in Cairo to visit the Sphinx and pyramids, caught a sleeper train down to Luxor, where we got on a cruise ship to take us down the Nile, took a day trip by plane over the Tropic of Cancer and Lake Nasser to visit Abu Simbel, before finally returning by sleeper train to enjoy sun bathing and luxury at a swish hotel in Cairo.

The sights were fascinating and as awe inspiring as anticipated. Modern Egypt was an experience in itself. We got quite expert at speed walking through shopping areas and avoiding all eye contact to minimise the amount of hassle we got. I have never heard the phrase 'How now brown cow' used so much, nor have I had my eyes compared to the blue eyes of Cleopatra before! Sorry to everyone expecting souvenirs and postcards - I was too scared to buy anything. I am very glad that I was part of a tour - we would never have done anything otherwise.

The towns and countryside were strikingly different from the UK. Many buildings in the poor areas did not have roofs, so as to avoid having to pay the tax for completed home. Traffic was insane. There were no rules and car horns are used in abundance. I was really impressed at how well drivers knew the size of their car and was very glad that I wasn't driving. I was particularly amused by pedestrian crossings in Aswan, because the green man moves: It walks leisurely at first, but as the time to cross reduces the man starts to sprint - I think that they should be introduced in the UK!

My highlight has to be the views of the countryside across the Nile. It was very alien, yet beautiful. I now have a wealth of inspiration for some new paintings - watch this space!

Christmas grotto

Last year my landlords went to town decorating their house, and consequently my annexe too, but this year I think that they are going to surpass themselves. The icicles have not been put on the gables yet, nor have the reindeer come out (think this will be done tomorrow), but the hedge has been freshly decorated with glowing sticks, which it wasn't last year. As a result I am fully expecting to feel even more like I am living in Santa's grotto. That is, until I walk inside and see my 3 decorations: 1 piece of tinsel, 1 3 foot tree and a mini navity scene, none of which are up yet.

The decorations are up just in time for my week (well actually 2) of work Christmas parties. Hopefully my ankle (which I twisted a fortnight ago), will be up to playing sport this week, otherwise I'm not going to have enough room for all that food!

London

London

Here are some photos of when I went to visit Thea, Jo and Ben in London for dinner, then went to Ben's brother's birthday party.

Miho's visit

My Japanese friend Miho came to visit for a couple of days in early November. It was fantastic to see her. Fellow Tokyo Albatross badminton club member Jason joined us for some of our trips. We went to Cambridge to visit the Botanic Gardens and Wimpole Hall to see the sheep (of course!), which are a rarity in Japan. It was quite funny trying to chase sheep to get photos of them! We also visited the slightly further attraction of Brussels! We took the Eurostar there. Once there we spent the day seeing the sights, such as Grand Place and the Manneken Pis, buying and eating a lot of chocolate and enjoying a huge bowl of delicious mussels each. We had a lot of comedy on the way back, taking some caramel sauce covered waffles through customs and the x-ray machine. They surprisingly let us through!
Jason has put up some photos of our trips on his picasa site:
