| Mitama Matsuri |
Straight after the Toro Nagashi celebrations I walked 5 minutes to the Yasunkuni shrine, where Mitama Matsuri was being celebrated. This is the soul festival and I think it is linked to the Buddhist Odon (see Toro Nagashi post for explanation).
The atmosphere at this shrine was amazing. There were lanterns everywhere. The stalls sold all types of typical Japanese snacks and was mesmerizing. People were doing traditional Japanese dancing around a statue. There were various acts singing on a stage and there was an impressive display of traditional Japanese drumming. These were huge wooden drums and the drumming was very energetic, synchronised and noisy!
